Historic Marble Desk and Custom Mahogany Conference Table

So these past couple months, I have been working on this beautiful custom project.  My client had pulled these gorgeous 4" thick marble slabs out of a historic building in Downtown Boise before it was remodeled.  The building dates back to the late 1800's!  How cool is that!?  He was inspired by them and wanted them for his desk top.  That's where I came in.  We sat and drew up a quick design for the desk, and a conference table to match.  The design was tweaked a few times, and I believe we ended up with the best result!

Everything is constructed out of gorgeous Mahogany, and received several coats of a rich Ebony stain.  Talk about a stunning contrast!

The marble weighs several hundred pounds, so coming up with something sturdy and safe was very important.  We designed a steal frame to support the marble and keep it from sagging or caving over time.

This project was going into another historic building in Downtown Boise, so we had to work with smaller elevators and awkward staircases.  After the last project we completed down the hall, we knew we wanted a simpler delivery and installation process this time.  So we built the conference table in sections.  The whole thing was built in the shop, and finished together, and then taken back apart to get it into place.  Below, Brock is screwing the two skirt/drawer sections together.

This conference table measures in at eight and a half feet!  102"!!  I built six pencil drawers (three for each side).

This was a fun and challenging project to build.  I am so grateful for the work God has brought my business.  I know that 2016 is going to be another great year for Rustique Restoration!  Thanks for following along and for all of your support through out each year!

Mahogany Writing Desk and Custom File Cabinets

This summer my hubby and I teamed up to build this custom job for my client.  Everything is built out of gorgeous Mahogany wood.  My client had four black file drawers that he wanted to have faced with wood to look more sophisticated for his new office space in one of the historic Jefferson buildings in downtown Boise.  So my hubby and I designed a cabinet to house two file drawer units, with shaker style drawer fronts and face frames.

This was my first time building cabinet doors!  It was actually fun and once I built a couple, I got pretty quick at it and really enjoyed it.

Everything got a coat of Mahogany stain, and then one coat of Ebony.  These two pictures are before the Ebony.

The corner desk and file cabinets had to be installed before we could build our top.  The top had to be templated just like you would do with granite.  That gave us the best seams and custom fit.

I love all the huge windows in this office space!  Great views and a really luxurious historical feel to it.

After we had the corner cabinetry installed, we began to build the writing desk.  I designed it with a trestle base, using 5" solid wood posts for the legs.

We layered the foot of the desk with three pieces in different thicknesses and sizes to add character and make this thing solid and sturdy!  Using a router, I gave the edges a nice beveled detail.

I am so pleased with how this desk turned out!  The Mahogany is so rich and has a gorgeous grain to it.

We built a pencil drawer too.  Love the contract between the stained and the natural inside.

This entire project was sealed with six coats of satin Polyurethane to give it a long lasting protection.

We wrapped this project up just three weeks prior to my due date.  Several late nights turned early mornings trying to get it done to make the deadline!  It was hard, but we conquered it!  Whew!  Well, I hope you are all having an amazing October!  November is just around the corner.  Have a great week!

Butterflies and an Office Makeover

Good Morning!  I hope you're all having a wonderful start to your day!  I personally have been so excited to put this post together!

So my two girls are at the age {7 & 9} where sharing a room just isn't cool anymore.. :?  So!  That said.. my nine year old daughter, Isabella, has moved into our office and claimed the guest bed!  I currently have Pottery Barn's Karala Palampore Duvet on the guest bed, but I feel it's a little too grown up for her.  She needs something lighter.. airier.. {is that even a word?}, something that would work for a nine year old girl and my office.  So I started my hunt and it didn't take long {since I visit Pottery Barn once a month, okay, twice a month!}.  I saw the new Butterfly printed duvet and {HUGE GASP} I fell in love!  And so did she!  YEAH!  Her favorite color is blue, so we will lay on a nice coat of blue on the wall behind her bed.  The other three walls are just a creamy color to keep things bright in there.  I may just use the same gorgeous blue that is painted in the hall bathroom.

I put together my idea board and am slowly gathering what we need.  I already have the duvet purchased and washed and ready.. So just a few more days or maybe a week and I'll get everything else.

I posted last week on my built in desk which you can find here.  Unfortunately the desk is just soaking up the lacquer, so here we are three days later still laying on coats.  And gosh is it ever stinky!  But I think tonight is the last coat and then I can start putting that room together!  The whole room is under sheets right now.

Below is a floor plan of the room.  It really isn't very big and not much to work with as far as space goes... but I think it will be beautiful and fresh by the time we're done with it!  I just love the idea of using a mason jar sconce for her lamp, but may have to just go with a table lamp for now.  I plan to spell her name down the side of the wall with the gold lettering.  Now we'll just have to see if it looks as good on the wall as it does in my mind! :)
I'm SO excited!  I'm also repainting the old wood antique bed in there which I haven't pictured yet, so if you have any great colors and ideas for that, I'd love to hear them!  Have a great day!
